The Kitchen by Emily K. Iekel

after James McNeill Whistler

She stands at the window

hair tucked away

hands on stone still.

Morning light gold through

tapping young leaves.

Her hands kneading on stone

yeast rising to the

twittering of birds.

Emily K. Iekel is a poet, translator, and musician living and teaching in Baltimore with her spouse. She has had poems, prose, and a children’s play published in Salome Magazine, Troubadour21, Elfwood, The Boiler Journal, English Teaching Daily, The Voices Project, Off the Wall Plays, and other venues.
